This section of the trail is a couple side roads West of Moncton.
OVERALL CONDITION
This section of the trail is not a must see. If you are section hiking and looking for the highlights you could skip it. However, there is a real sense of accomplishment when you hike even the meh sections of any trail. The work is always worth the effort. The trail is nicely maintained (Thank you G2G Volunteers!). The ground is flat with minimal bumps/holes. Actually in this section, and every section since the August maintenance was completed, the only holes we saw were homes for animals.
The trail is tree lined for about half of the section, but I do not think it would give much shade, maybe just some protection from wind, and I highlight some. The rest of the time you are definitely open to the elements. We hiked this section in early December, luckily it was not windy otherwise it would have been too chilly.
There is a small river that runs under the first part of the trail when hiking from Gillis Line to McNaught Line. As usual the section is bordered by fields. Like I said we hiked in December so the crops were done. Another time of year may provide nicer scenery.
TRAFFIC
Since we are in the middle of the towns we tend to see less people on the trail, especially on a Sunday morning in December. So we had this section to ourselves, other than the beautiful assortment of birds that flew around as if we weren't there.
As for road traffice unfortunately you can both see and hear the traffic driving down the highway. Again this does not bother us, but it can take away from the we are out in the wild feeling you may be going for.
PARKING
As is usual when section hiking there is nothing more than roadside parking available. I should also remind you that we always park in the middle of 2 sections so we have the option to double up if we wish when we are halfway. For this section though I would not recommend parking on McNaught Line, which is a County Road. It is paved and has slightly wider shoulders but it is busy. We put Audrey into her snow gear at the trail head, not the car, as there were definitely more cars rushing past than we were comfortable with. See our previous post on McNabb Line to Gillis Line for where we would recommend you park for this section.
