G2G Series: Road 166 to Road 154

We started section hiking the G2G back when we had our daughter. This was something we could do, while having a young baby during Covid. If you have been reading this for a while you will notice that we went from pushing a stroller, having a child in a carrier, pulling a wagon to having a toddler hiking along beside us. Well, we have now entered a new era for our section "hikes".

We are officially biking the rest of the G2G.

You may have noticed, we get out on the trail less and less. This has been because while our daughter loves being out on the trail she does not love hiking for hours. And if you have ever went on a walk with a 4 year old, you know I mean hooouuurssss. While our daughter is a trooper and loves being out on the trail this has resulted in less family hikes.

So as our family needs change we are adapting to find ways to keep us out on the trail and finally finish our goal of section hiking, now biking, the G2G. So you will see our sections are getting bigger. Not only are we able to move faster now that we are biking we also cover a lot more ground.

This is the first section we did on the bikes. We covered Road 166 to Road 154, through Monkton, on Mother's Day 2024. It was the only way I wanted to spend my day.

Overall Condition

The last time we were on the trail there was snow on the ground. Now there are buds on the trees and flowers popping up. We saw a few other bikers out on the trail, which I have a feeling will be more common as we get closer to Guelph. This section passes through Monkton, a small, rural town. We did not stop in town but I would say our favourite part of this section was right in town after we crossed the Highway. It was the most tree lined portion of the section. I also like to see how the trail passes right through residential areas. I get a little jealous of those with the trail literally in their backyard.

The trail itself was nicely groomed from the winter. We did not experience any holes or ruts. The trail is, as usual, along farm land which was a nice view in the early spring.

Traffic

This section crosses Highway 23, that goes through Monkton. Naturally there was more traffic, but still minimal.

We have found that the sections we have been on most recently, mainly Blyth up to now, has more visibility of the surrounding roadways. However, this has never been a safety issue. It just may not be the views you are going for when on the trail. I have been surprised that we have never come across any farm machinery at work. But we still have a few sections to go :)

Parking

As you can see from the picture we were not the only ones with the genius idea of hitting the trail today!

As always parking is available on the side of the road. We did have to park a bit further from the trail head this time, just where the shoulder wasn't as steep.
