G2G Series: Road 174 to Road 169

Updated: May 18

One of our favourite things about the G2G is the unexpected things that come up. You never know what each section holds; people, animals, sites. Sometimes our hikes are uneventful. Others are fun, interesting and exciting.

Overall Condition

We hiked this section in February 2024. So there were spots with snow. We were lucky that the weather was cold enough so the snow was mostly frozen so we could walk on the snow, instead of sinking into it.

One of our favourite things about winter hiking is the wildlife. The G2G is not only a recreational trail for us humans, it is a highway for the wildlife. You can see countless footprints on the trail. It is fun to follow them and think about where they were going. We also enjoyed spotting birds nests and apple trees.

Wildlife are not the only ones out on the trail in the winter though. The trails are still busy with human traffic, all year long. On this section we shared the trail with a man and his dog and a woman with her horse. It was wonderful to see others out enjoying the trail.

Traffic

Traffic in this section was similar to that on the Livingston Line section, as we did complete the hike on the same day. Both Walton Road and Blyth Road are visible from the trail. Walton Road is a gravel back road that has sections with no winter maintenance. Blyth Road is a paved highway that definitely sees more traffic.

Parking

We completed this section as a double header. Meaning we added it to the last section: Livingston Line to Road 174. So we parked on Livingston Line. You can read about this sideroad parking in both the McNaught Line post and the Livingston Line post.
